A major stop on the annual Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Championship Tournament Circuit, the Zurich Classic began life as the New Orleans Open in 1938 on the golf course in City Park. Since that time the tourney has gone through numerous title sponsorships and three other venues before arriving at its present-day name and location. As the 11th oldest stop on the PGA tour, past New Orleans tournament winners have included such golfing greats as Jack Nicklaus, Billy Casper, Byron Nelson, Davis Love III, David Toms and Vijay Singh.
The Zurich Classic is played every year during the final week of April at the Tournament Players Club roughly 15 miles west of downtown New Orleans. The TPC, completed in the early 2000s, offers all of the amenities of a modern golf course, in addition to being maintained in absolute peak condition at all times.
Proceeds from the event go to the Fore!Kids Foundation, a charitable organization that generates funds through the production of golf-related events to support activities and programs benefiting area youth. The Foundation also hosts an American Junior Golf Association event, a summer Junior Golf Program and the Golf Ball, a black tie gala.
